Millions of people visit the thousands of islands that
comprise Indonesia every
year. Its tourism industry is one of its major contributors to the economy, so
visitors will find themselves welcomed and charmed. One caution: various
problems have plagued the country such as weather extremes and terrorist
attacks, so UK travellers should check government warnings before visiting
Indonesia. Nonetheless, the islands are irresistible for those seeking an
exotic experience.
First stop on any trip to Indonesia is likely to be either
Jakarta or Bali, the two most popular tourist areas. Bali is
by far the most prominent set of islands in the archipelago, internationally
known as a tropical playground. Although you can tour around the main Bali
Island in a single day, you really need to plan a longer visit to fully
appreciate the magic. Not only are Bali’s pure beaches (and opportunities for
many water sports) a delight, but lively music and dance spectacles abound.
Jakarta offers much for the traveller as well.
Since you will be able to see only a tiny slice of Indonesia on any trip,
stroll over to the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah. This is a huge park that
recreates in miniature all of the provinces of Indonesia. You get at least a
small helping of what each area is like, including its customs, industries,
languages and foods. This is a manmade park, so don’t expect authenticity;
rather, expect a sound educational tour.
If you are a museum lover, while in Jakarta take in the
National Museum, the Museum Bank Indonesia or the Puppet Museum. The latter is
not just for children; it is based on a very old form of storytelling. You will
get a history lesson in puppet making and can peruse an exhibit about the early
Dutch governance of these islands.
When it is time for an adventure in the outdoors, consider
viewing the unbelievable coral reefs in Bunaken National Park and Lembeh
Strait. These are not just “coral reefs” but over 250 different types of
coral surrounded by uncountable different species of fish. You cannot see this
sight anywhere else in the world as well as here.
Finally, no visit to Indonesia is complete without touring a
temple or shrine. If you have time to get to Java, you can marvel at the Prambanan
Temples. Hundreds of temples form the complex, but three are particularly
worth examining closely: the Brahma Temple, the Vishnu Temple and the Shiva
Temple. During the months of May through October, an open-air theater features
Indonesian dance depicting Hindu history.
