Paris is a dream destination for many-amazing culture,
shopping and food. But, like many European destinations, it can be pricy. With
some careful planning, however, travelers on a tighter budget can make it
happen. One of the best ways to save money is to fill your days with as many
free attractions as possible. Luckily, Paris has many, with some being the most
iconic sites of the city. Here are just a few to consider adding to your
itinerary.
Bridges of the River
Seine
The bridges of the River Seine, which runs through the heart
of Paris, have been featured in many a film. This area offers some great photo
ops, and if you want the best view of the city lights in the evening, this is
the place to go. You can also get some great alternative views of Notre Dame.
Notre Dame
Not only is the cathedral of Notre Dame one of the most
iconic sites in the whole city, but it’s also totally free to enter. You can
get some great pictures of the ornate décor and vaulted ceilings. If you want
to climb to the top, however, you will need to pay a fee.
Le Marche aux Puces
de St-Ouen
No matter where you visit, seeing the local flea markets and
fairs is always a great way to see everyday life and experience some
authenticity. The flea market and antique fair at Le Marche aux Puces de
St-Ouen is filled with an eccentric mix of goods to ogle, and you do not have
to buy a thing—unless you feel so inclined. Take the metro to the Porte de
Clignancourt and walk under the bridge and once you get past the souvenir
stalls, you will see side streets crammed with goods.
Sacre Coeur
Located in the hilly area of Montmartre is the beautiful
Sacre Coeur church. Make sure to bring your camera since this spot offers some
of the best views of the city. You can hike up there on your own or take a
funicular for about the same cost as a ticket on the Metro.
Musée Carnavalet
Learning a bit about the history of a place always makes for
a more interesting trip. The Musée Carnavalet is considered one of the best
history museums in Paris, full of interesting artifacts and exhibits that
illustrate the city’s long and fascinating past.
Jardin du Luxembourg
If you are in need of a nature fix after checking out the
more urban sites, head over to the Jardin du Luxembourg, full of beautiful
gardens and fountains. Seating is scattered throughout, and it is a great place
to just relax and get some great photos. The central pavilion area contains
many beautiful sculpture inspired by Greek and Roman Mythology.
Père Lachaise
Cemetery
While visiting a cemetery may not seem like the most ideal
tourist activity, the area around Père Lachaise Cemetery is considered one of
the most atmospheric walks in the city, with calling crows and beautiful
tree-lined avenues. Some famous people buried here include the literary greats
such as Proust, Balzac and Oscar Wilde as well as The Doors’frontman Jim
Morrision.

afford it, know that you can fill your days with activities and sights that
won’t cost a single euro. So, start researching your flights to Paris and pick
