Venice has always been one of Italy and Europe’s most
popular tourist spots and it’s as popular as ever. Thousands continue to flock
to the Floating City every year and the city’s identity is that mix of locals
and visitors that you’ll find in almost all of Venice’s little alleyways.
But what do the tourists to the city actually do during
their time? Well here are a few ideas that no tourist should miss before
heading back to the airport after a trip to Venice.
Gondola Ride
Nothing sums up Venice better than its network of canals.
And there is no better way to explore the canals than by gondola.
The city is made up of 118 little islands so a large part of
the city is simply water and you will have no choice but to take to the waters
to get around. A gondola ride is a relaxing way to get from one side to the
other and with a ride just before sunset, it can be a very romantic experience
– definitely one not to be missed!
Italian Food
Everybody knows how great the Italian cuisine is and in
Venice it’s no different. The city is home to many skilled Italian chefs and
you’ll find bistros all around the city – almost all of them with a view to
remember.
Whether risotto, pasta, suppli or even the traditional pizza
takes your fancy, you’ll find it all on offer in Venice!
Saint Mark’s Square
The 9th century Saint Mark’s Square is perhaps the most
famous landmark that Venice has to offer. Saint Mark’s Golden Basilica is, of
course, the main attraction, but the Clock Tower, Doge’s Palace and the Columns
of San Marco and San Theodoro are also popular with tourists.
It might surprise you when you realise that the tourists in
the square are actually outnumbered … by pigeons! The birds have been part of
the scenery themselves for many many years and are to be found in almost every
photo taken on the square. Anyone who has seen Indiana Jones and The Last
Crusade (where Indiana comes up through the ground of the square) will remember
the chase scene and the many pigeons that played a part as extras!
See Venice From Above
The Campanile is Venice’s tallest building, just falling
short of 100m. So if you want to see Venice from up high – and yes, you do –
then this is the place to check out. Luckily there is a lift so you won’t have
to climb all the way up yourself.
It was originally built in the 9th century, but actually
collapsed in 1902. It has been rebuilt exactly as it was so you can step back
in time as you step out on to the top and you can enjoy a birds-eye view of
Venice!
Wherever you are in Venice you’ll be able to get a great
feel for Italy’s Floating City. Oh-Venice have apartments for rent in many of
the city’s islands so you’ll be able to find a place to stay in the part of the
city that you think suits you best.
Just so long as you tick these four items of your list,
you’ll have a great time in Venice!
