Quite a number of people call Long Island home, and still
others come to visit on a regular basis. Even for those who have never been
there before, this island provides an opportunity to have a vacation that is
quite unlike any other. What do you need to know about a trip to the island?
When to Go
Long Island is really a suitable place to visit at any time
of the year, but summer does tend to be the most popular. From Long Beach and
Lido Beach on the western end to the beautiful Hamptons out east, Long Island
is home to a variety of beach communities. During the fall, you will find
plenty of apple and pumpkin picking opportunities and Suffolk County, and
winter is home to a host of events at places such as the Long Island Children’s
Museum. Check out the Planting Fields Arboretum in the spring, or go for a walk
along the shorelines when the warm wind blows through the air.
Where to Stay
First of all, you will need to pick in which county you wish
to stay. Nassau County can provide a very short train ride to Penn Station,
which is located in Manhattan. You’ll find gorgeous hotels such as the Garden
City Hotel located in the town of the same name. Nassau is a densely populated
suburban area with some sections that are similar to Queens and Brooklyn.
Western parts of Suffolk County can resemble Nassau, and the eastern ends tend
to be more rural. You can find spacious and airy places, such as the East Wind
Resort and Spa, out there.
What to Do
The activities in which you can engage heavily depend upon
the people with whom you are traveling and the time of year that you’re going.
In the colder months, try out Monster mini-golf in the western Suffolk area.
All throughout the year, the wineries out east are open, but they are particularly
beautiful in the middle of the spring through the late fall. For families
traveling with little ones, you can try out the Long Island Children’s Museum
in Nassau or head to aquarium in Riverhead.
Where to Eat
So many different types of food exist on Long Island, and
you will never be at a loss. When you want some seriously good Italian food,
King Umberto’s in Elmont is the place to go. For pub fare, try out Shackleton’s
in Franklin Square. If you want something a little bit different. Waterzooi is
a Belgian Bistro located in Garden City. Fine dining can be found at an array
of restaurants such as Jewel, Rein, 21 Main and a plethora of little bistros
that dot the towns.
Access to the City
As mentioned earlier, it’s smart to stay in Nassau County if
you’re planning to go to the city. You could easily drive into Queens, and some
of the train rides into Manhattan are only 30 to 40 minutes. If you are going
to stay out east, it’s important to realize the train ride into the city could
take you a couple of hours. Once you are in Manhattan, or even the other
boroughs, you will be able to go to Broadway shows, eat dessert at the famous
Serendipity and check out the Museum of Modern Art.
Vacationing on Long Island will provide you with an
experience that you are sure never to forget. Plenty to do exists on both Long
Island and in the five boroughs of the city. In order to get in as much as
possible, be sure to plan your trip early on.
